About the project
CARE has worked in Haiti since 1954, implementing programs spanning emergency response and recovery to long-term development. CARE-Haiti was planning to prime for an upcoming USAID/BHA-funded Development Food Security Activity (DFSA) – targeting the Central Plateau, the Northeast, the North and the South. The development of the technical proposal required solid evidence-based data from both primary and secondary sources.
About my role
The objective of the research was to collect reliable data to inform the pre-design and development of the new Haiti USAID/BHA-funded DFSA proposal. As a formative research consultant, I was responsible to:
- Review the methodological approach
- Edit the data collection tools.
- Train the enumerators and supervise the whole data collection process
- Develop a full narrative report and present the key findings to the CARE international team.
About my accomplishment
For the purpose of this mission, I prioritized a qualitative data collection method. Indeed, I edited and reviewed focus group discussion and key informant interview guides and developed key research questions to guide the whole research process. Regarding the training for enumerators, I co-facilitated a three-day training session to present the goals of the research and the data collection tools to them and make sure they have a good understanding of the context in which the mission is performing. The training was very participative. Enumerators were able to practice the tools and ask questions. Additionally, I have developed a strategy to evaluate the consistency and the validity of the data collected on a daily basis so they can be relevant to the report.
In order to analyze the data collected and produce the report, I used the content analysis approach. The idea was to establish whether certain words, themes, or concepts within the data collected are present. Here are the different steps I focused on to perform the content analysis:
- Select the words, themes, or concepts to analyze.
- Define the units and categories of analysis.
- Develop an analysis grid.
- Perform the analysis and draw conclusions.
The full narrative report highlighted the key findings by sector (agriculture and livelihoods, Maternal Health and Nutrition, Disaster Risk and Reduction, Gender and youth and Financial inclusion) and presented to the CARE international team.
